They certainly don't design them to be recycled or batteries changed any more. Once you've fabricated the addaptor, you're replacement battery pack could be wired to a voltage closer to what's needed. Say 9. It depends on what you find after you've opened the battery pack. Hard to believe so many people have looked at this and my other battery hack instructable!
Hope they find useful ways to keep old tools working. I agree with dendave. I also know for a fact that I can get any part for any of my Milwaukee power tools including batteries. It always pays to buy high quality tools. Reply 9 years ago on Introduction. Reply 10 years ago on Introduction. I've got a Milwaukee 3. I'm an Electrician destructing, drilling, and screwing for a living. Handy Dave's philosophy is undeniable. The additional cost is more than negated when you have no complete tool systems being tossed in the dustbin.
My wife doesn't get it or approve but if I allowed her to purchase I'd be pitching Ryobi's once a month. Why would that happen? Has anyone successfully done this? Yes, the drill was 12v and the battery should have been 12v. The drill overheat could have been cause by one of two things: 1. As someone else here mentioned, car batteries vary in output voltages slightly.
The battery could have had an output voltage slightly above 12v. The wire you used to connect the car battery to the drill was too thin. That drill is going to draw 12v at around 2 amps, depending on the drill. For this reason, I would guestimate you should use a wire no smaller than 10 Gauge, for both positive and negative leads.
If the drill was unable to draw the current needed, this would cause either a voltage drop or increase can't remember which right off hand either of which means death to the drill. Reply 12 years ago on Introduction.
Is this something to worry about?? Reply 3 years ago. You cannot charge a Lithium battery using your old Bosch NiCd charger- that would be bad as Lithium cells require very specific charging rates. Lithium batteries will not have any trouble providing enough power for your saw but you need to have a low voltage alarm to prevent over discharge of the battery pack. Reply 1 year ago. I'm brand new to instructables. Here are some follow up thoughts.
When you change the battery type as in this how-to, you change the balance of the tool. This might not matter on a circular saw, but for me, it really matters on a drill. A lighter battery will almost always cause the working end of the drill to pull down against your wrist.
Might not matter for a couple of holes or screws unless you have weak wrists or carpel tunnel but that pull can ruin you by the end of a day. I know this is counterintuitive, but be prepared to add some weight to the battery housing. If you don't have an original battery pack for the tool, try looking in recycling bins wherever you see them.
The store may not be allowed to let you take any, but it's worth a try. Try 3rd-party batteries made to fit your tool.
I'm also very skeptical about rigging lithium batteries. A poorly done job on a conversion like this can be a serious fire hazard. I had a professionally rebuilt 12V NiCad start smoking on me once. That brings me to Be careful about battery rebuilders. It was past the warranty before I realized the rebuilds actually weighed less indicating the shorter version. The batteries had short lives.
If you choose the rebuild route, ask to see the ratings on the cells they will use. If you decide you want to rebuild your own batteries with like cells, DON'T solder the tabs. The heat damages the battery. Search for "diy battery tab welder. I saw some online that scared me. Best wishes to all Ps. That's what Harbor Freight is for.
Thanks for the info. I too experienced a problem with rebuilt batteries plus the battery case wouldn't stay together afterward. Just now saw this 'ible. Good job! I have a couple of old Thank you. Couple of questions. Where are the terminals inside the tool that the wire leads must be soldered to? A pic of this would be very helpful. Is the alarm just shoved into the battery case and reattached? That's what I inferrred reading your description. Doesn't that make the alarm less effective.
I spent a small fortune on Milwaukee tools using the Nicd 18v batteries. I know sooner did this and the v18 and now the M18 has come out. I am very reluctant to buy any more tools from Milwaukee for this reason. I found an adapter that I can use an M18 battery on my tools built for nickel cadmium. That allowed me to dig them out of the trash and start using them again. Voltage boosters? Dumb dumb dumb. Battery adapters? All 18 volt batteries have a volt max voltage. I will agree that at least in theory, matching the intended product to the intended battery will lead to the absolute best results.
I imagine that there are technologies in place to conserve … Read more ». A lot of people Not Sam in the posts below are going to destroy their tools with cheap adapters lmao.
